One of the most common questions from Ugandan crypto users: "How do I get money in and out?" This guide covers depositing (putting money in) and withdrawing (getting money out) in Uganda's specific context.

Depositing: How to Fund Your Exchange Account in Uganda

The primary way to fund your exchange account in Uganda is through P2P trading — you buy crypto from another person using MTN Mobile Money. This is different from "depositing" in the traditional sense.

The P2P deposit process:

  1. Log in to Bybit or Binance
  2. Go to Buy Crypto → P2P Trading
  3. Select "Buy" USDT or Bitcoin
  4. Filter by MTN Mobile Money
  5. Choose a seller and place order
  6. Send MTN payment → receive crypto

Withdrawing: How to Convert Crypto Back to UGX

Withdrawing is the reverse — you sell crypto to another person on P2P and receive UGX in your MTN Mobile Money wallet.

  1. Go to P2P → click "Sell"
  2. Select your cryptocurrency (BTC or USDT)
  3. Filter by MTN Mobile Money
  4. Choose a buyer and set your sell amount
  5. Receive MTN MoMo payment → release crypto
  6. Check your MTN MoMo balance — UGX arrives within minutes

Sending Crypto Between Wallets

If you want to move crypto from one exchange to another, or to a personal wallet like Trust Wallet:

  1. Get your destination wallet address (long string of letters and numbers)
  2. On the source exchange, go to Withdraw → choose the coin
  3. Select the correct blockchain network (e.g., TRC20 for USDT is cheapest)
  4. Enter the destination address — triple-check it, there are no refunds
  5. Confirm the withdrawal and wait 5–30 minutes for confirmation

Important: Network Fees

Sending crypto on blockchain costs a "network fee." For USDT, use the TRC20 network (Tron) — fees are typically $1 or less. Avoid the ERC20 (Ethereum) network for small transfers — fees can be $5–50.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wrong network: Sending USDT on ERC20 to a TRC20 address can result in permanent loss.
  • Copy-paste errors: Always copy wallet addresses — never type them manually.
  • Releasing before payment confirmed: In P2P selling, only release after UGX arrives in your MTN MoMo.
  • Forgetting 2FA: Without 2FA, a hacker who gets your password can empty your account immediately.
